You may have the necessary tools and be ready to dive into your DIY painting project, but have you adequately primed the surface you’ll be coating? If you think primer isn’t necessary, you’re certainly not alone. Many people are confident they won’t need to prime the wall, and most regret this. John Paul’s Paint and Decor carries premium Benjamin Moore primer, and we’re here to help you choose the perfect one for your job.
Benjamin Moore primers have been setting the industry standard for quality and reliability for decades.
The INXSL-X® line features all-purpose and specialty primers that guarantee stunning, professional-looking results.
More experienced painters will appreciate the versatility and quality of Benjamin Moore professional primers.
Priming is not always necessary, but it is highly recommended. If you doubt the paint-ability of a surface, it’s best to use a primer. Primers create a stable surface for the paint to adhere correctly. Porous surfaces that are not properly primed will require several coats of color to achieve full coverage. Walls that have been skim-coated and unfinished wood are exceptionally porous. On the flip side, a finish that is too glossy is also not ideal. A surface that is too smooth will prevent paint from adhering as it should.
If you’ll be covering stains or other blemishes, it’s wise to use a primer. The transition between a dark color and a significantly lighter shade is also made easier with primers. You may think your paint has covered the existing color or water stain until it dries fully and the old color or water spot is visible through the paint.
Repair any cracks or dents in your wall using caulk and a putty knife to smooth the edges. Once the caulk is completely dry, gently rub the surface using 220-grit sandpaper. Remove any dust with a damp paper towel and dry the wall thoroughly before beginning to prime. It’s a good idea to lightly moisten your paint roller to help keep the primer on the surface of the roller instead of being absorbed into the material. Use a brush to cut in at the corners of the wall and cover any obvious blemishes before continuing to prime the entire wall. Once the primer has dried, another light sanding will provide you with a perfect surface for paint.
